Volkswagen to Unveil its Electric Concept Car at CES 2016
Volkswagen would really love to be in the news for reasons other than the dieselgate scandal right now. And it might just happen next month when the German automaker goes to the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which is CES’ parent organisation. CTA announced that Volkswagen will take the CES stage on the 5th of January where it will unveil “an all-electric concept car while focusing his remarks on electric mobility driving the automotive market.”
We’ve been hearing for a while now that Volkswagen-owned Audi and Porsche have been working on electric cars themselves. Volkswagen doesn’t want to be left behind on that front especially now when all we hear these days is more trouble for the scandal-plagued company. VW has been focussing all its energy (whatever is left of it) on EV production. The details of the mysterious EV are at a minimum right now, though the buzz is that it could be the next generation e-Golf.
The event is important for VW for more than one reason. CTA boss Gary Shapiro agreed that the diesel issue will be on everyone’s mind at the CES. This is the perfect time for Volkswagen to start changing audience’s negative opinions about the company by revealing their future plan of action and how electric cars will help bring them out of the dark times.
“When we agreed to a Volkswagen keynote earlier this year we, along with the world, did not know much about emissions testing, but after talking with Dr. Diess I felt the CES audience would be interested in his vision and curious about his plans for a new type of sustainable car. Now, VW has an opportunity at CES to show the world its designs for the future and how the company views electric mobility and sustainability,”
However, it feels unlikely that the ‘concept’ EV will see production next year, since Volkswagen has a lot of ‘other’ debts to clear first. Meanwhile, Porsche’s Mission E will also be production ready only by the end of the decade as is also the case with Audi’s unnamed electric SUV. But the fact that Volkswagen and its children are thing electric is perhaps a positive sign of things to come.
