LG and Mercedes-Benz Collaborate to Plan Self-Driving Cars

Self-driving cars were all the rage this year. After Google unveiled the prototype of its first driverless car, many auto companies joined the game to launch their own. LG and Mercedes-Benz recently announced a partnership to make an intelligent camera system for automated driving.

Installing a number of cameras to detect what’s in front of the car and how far, is the first step to giving it the self-awareness necessary to take the burden of driving away from the driver. LG has announced that it is working with car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz for the “next-generation camera systems.” The company also said that as part of the deal, it will be providing the “core components” of the self-driving cars from Mercedes-Benz in the future.

The joint system will be based on LG’s existing ‘ADAS’ (Advanced Drive Assistance System) products which include cameras that produce alerts when a vehicle changes lane, reads road signs, check the driver’s health status and issues proximity-based warnings for obstacles.

For LG, this partnership with Mercedes-Benz is the perfect opportunity to establish a foothold in the autonomous car market which may hold a prosperous future. Mercedes-Benz gets LG’s technology in the field of image sensing and information technology, making it a win-win situation for both the companies.
